Keema Mattar

3tbs. butter
1/4-1/2 onion
1 clove garlic
1lb. ground beef
1 heaping tbs. curry powder
salt & pepper to taste
1/4tsp. cinnamon
1/4tsp. turmeric
1/4tsp. powdered ginger
1/4tsp. cloves
1/4tsp. red chili powder
1 large sweet potato
14oz. peas
14oz. no-salt-added diced tomatoes


This is the Pakistani version of Hamburger Helper-- that's the closest thing I can compare it to.  It can be thrown together in a half hour, comes out comforting and tasty and, perhaps the best perk, is inexpensive.  A quick recommendation: instead of buying whole garlic and peeling off cloves as you need them, invest in a Costco-sized jar of minced garlic for the fridge-- best purchase my roommate ever made.  Well, that and the fully stocked bar in our dining room.

First, heat the butter and the chopped onion for a bit over medium heat and then add garlic.  Cook until the onion is softened, making sure not to burn the garlic.  Add the meat and cook through, adding spices as it heats.  Pour in peas, sweet potato, and drained tomatoes.  Cover and let simmer on low heat for 20-25 minutes, until potato is cooked.
